City Conducting Smoke Testing of Sanitary Sewer Line

Smoke Testing

The City has begun the I&I smoke testing project in certain areas of the city. Door hangers and street signs have been placed in the areas where the testing will occur. If smoke enters your home, it is likely you have a dry P-trap in a seldom used shower or sink . Just run a full stream of water for a minute or so to fill the P-trap.

Smoke testing is a relatively simple process that consists of blowing smoke mixed with large volumes of air into the sanitary sewer line usually induced through the manhole. The smoke travels the path of least resistance and quickly shows up at sites that allow surface water inflow. Smoke will identify broken manholes, uncapped lines and even will show cracked mains and laterals, providing there is a passageway for the smoke to travel to the surface. If smoke enters your home, it is likely you have a dry P-trap in a shower or sink seldom used. Just run a full stream of water for a minute or so to fill the P-trap.
